Columns at the Pescheria

The famous "Pescheria".
They say that a fish market of one type or another has been found on this spot for over a thousand years.
I don't know if that's an exaggeration, but it's been around long enough that someone decided to embellish the columns on a seafood theme.

This one is a squid,

...and of course here we have a "fish" theme.

The fish market sets up in the wee hours of the morning, and by noon the place is either empty or on it's way there.
It could be said that the columns are there to tell latecomers that they are in the right place, but missed the show.
But if you do arrive late, believe me, you'll know you're in the right place...
because nothing smells like a fish market.
I posted a few great photos by Sean Antonioli in April of last year.
To see them and read more about the Pescheria, go to my post from April 21st, 2009.

The Pescheria building is a neo-renaissance revival style structure, built in 1905 or 1917, depending on which guidebook one reads.

Yet, the fish market has been in the same place for 600+ years, so the columns head themes are much legit.

But why do they call it a fish market, when tentacled creatures and other weird sea fruits clearly dominate the displays?
