Cinco de Mayo

Happy 5th of May - Mexico's Independence Day.

In some parts of the world it's a reverent holiday, in others it's a real good excuse to enjoy all the good food and drinks that Mexico's famous for. In the eyes of a gondolier, both are noble pursuits.

So today I would like to salute all the gondoliers I know who either are Mexican, or celebrate like they are.

This seems like a good place to post a link back to the only Venice-built gondolas I know of in Mexico.

And for those of you who are looking for something to google, I have one word:

"Xochimilco".
They're not gondolas by Venetian standards, but to anyone who rows a gondola, they are interesting.
Happy Cinco de Mayo amigos.

Viva la gondola!

"Ei fu. Siccome immobile,
dato il mortal sospiro,
stette la spoglia immemore
orba di tanto spiro,
così percossa, attonita
la terra al nunzio sta,
muta pensando all'ultima
ora dell'uom fatale;
né sa quando una simile
orma di pie' mortale
la sua cruenta polvere
a calpestar verrà."
A few words from the ode "Cinque maggio" written by Alesandro Manzoni in honour of the death of Napoleone Bonaparte (1821).

A much better reason to celebrate the 5th of May. Grazie Nereo.
