The last time I was in Venice, we stayed in an apartment just a stone's throw from this pizzeria. In times past we've stayed in places more in line with tourist routes.
Along the south shore of Venice, facing the Giudecca, there's a fondamenta known as the Zattere.
Staying near the Zattere was a great decision.
We rubbed elbows with locals, shopped for groceries like Venetians, and managed to avoid the hordes of tourists with their umbrella-carrying guides.
The platform in the photo is a unique feature of the Zattere - a clever way of adding to the dining room with what is essentially a floating dock. Throw in tables and chairs and erect a canopy, and you're open for business.
