It's that time of year; the time when gondola operators living in areas with actual seasons, wait for the right conditions to launch their blessed boats.
I had a great conversation the other day with John Kerschbaum in Minnesota - he'd just taken out his first fare for the year.
Joe Gibbons in Boston sent me a similar message last week,
and of course we saw some "photographic evidence" of the first launching of the season in Providence.
One of my very favorite gondola images came out of Minnesota in 2009, when John Kerschbaum and some of his staff were "putting in" for the season. That photo is posted above and more can be viewed at "Minnesota Launchings - Photos from Edina".
If you are launching this month, or have a good photo from this gondolier's ritual, send it to me at greg@gondola.com.
